OCZ Vertex 4 SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" SSD 128GB Review
The OCZ Vertex 4 SATA III 2.5” 128GB is an internal solid state drive that consumes less power and friendly with all the types of files whether compressible and incompressible. It doesn’t have problems handling multi-media files and videos; and finds it easy to manage ZIP files and software. It claims a booting up time of less than nine seconds.
One word to describe this drive by most of the users is FAST. There are just very few people who say that it is slow due to their defective units. This drive is considered by many as an awesome upgrade and one of the best investments they have ever done. Boot up time is generally less than ten seconds and rebooting is similar. One can use this drive for many months and encounter no issues at all.
Gaming becomes really enjoyable with this drive and users wouldn’t mind paying a higher price, even without the discounts, for its pleasing performance. However, this drive isn’t exempted; others had a DOA (Dead on Arrival) experience while others had their drives lived up to a week before they malfunctioned. Though warranty is limited 5 years, still, to request for the RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) and the conversations needed to be done with the technical support are time-consuming and do involve some expenses.
There are differences though with what the advertisements are saying compared to the actual performance of the drive. For instance, for the 4KB Random Read, it is claimed to do up to 90K IOPS, however, some users only get more than 50K IOPS. The 4K Random Write as claimed is up to 120K IOPS, but some only get less than 50K IOPS. Other results were the same; they fell short of what the advertisements claimed. On the other hand, the results still show that this SSD is one of the very fast gadgets on the market these days.
There is a need to have a regular back up for SSDs. They normally die without warning and so, most users don’t want to be kept off guard. They maintain a backup just in case problems arise with the SSD. Some users think that this solid state drive is easy to install, but, others think differently. It also needs some firmware updating before the data can be transferred from the old to the new drive.
One usual gripe is the mounting bracket which comes with the drive’s package doesn't fit into the drive slots. It is quite difficult to mount and many times, the drive just doesn't get mounted. Others just buy the mount bracket that fits. The installation manual is not clear enough and it has very few instructions on initializing the drive whether primary or secondary. Due to this lack of information from the manual, some users make untiring calls for technical supports.
Overall, the OCZ Vertex 4 SATA III 2.5” 128GB is a very fast solid state drive that has nice features from the latest technologies. It is affordable and has satisfied most of the users. Gaming is never a problem with this drive and it has made radical improvements on old computers and laptops. For many users, this drive is in a good price.
