    • The good:
Heavy-duty use, dust/moisture protected, excellent high ISO coverage, incredible detail, user-friendly, great DSLR for serious enthusiasts and photography pros!
    • The bad:
Only one card slot for external storage, operations may be intimidating and cost can be expensive for casual users!
Nikon has been a force to be reckoned with for the past 95 years since the Japanese corporation was first established in 1917 and with the Nikon D700, it’s plain to see why. Designed to empower photographers with maximum photographic agility, the D700 is filled with features that span from a durable build to incredibly rich image quality.

Nikon combines its 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor with the exlusive EXPEED digital image processing to ensure professional quality with low-noise, high-ISO performance. Along with this, the active D-Lighting function showcases a unique three-phase dynamic control balances shadows and highlights while maintaining contrast to bring out normally lost details. It also showcases two Live View shooting modes with superb autofocus precision and three Dynamic AF modes that give you fast and accurate options to suit any shooting requirement. The signature Scene Recognition System also pushes auto-exposure intelligence and white-balance detection for optimum performance while an integrated Dust Reduction System efficiently minimizes degrading dust particles through an ultrasonic sensor cleaning to give you crisp, clear images.

The versatile D700 ensures the legendary Nikon precision with 1,005-Pixel 3D Color Matrix Metering II and an advanced color control with 9 customizable settings and 4 preset options. Sporting a wide ISO sensitivity of up to 6400 with unbelievably low noise, you still get the finest details shooting in even less than optimal lighting situations. A calibrated, 3 in. high-res VGA color monitor with 170-degree wide-angle viewing in tempered-glass protection gives you instant, excellent image review.

Built well to last, this tough animal is not only for casual everyday use or for city-slickers on holiday. The rugged magnesium-alloy build is designed to accompany the more adventurous bull-runners and free-spirited mavericks in a wide variety of environments and situations. Combining extensive dust and moisture seals and a durable shutter mechanism tested to 150,000 cycles, the D700 performs incredible professional DSLR feats with extreme agility. It’s also a bit weight to provide additonal stability and balance even as it’s on a tripod or secured on a bare rock face for a timed shot.

Also worthy of note is its full image size chip as it does away with potentially problematic factor conversions. Some may look for a bit more brilliance in the images but nothing that can’t really be tweaked in a photo editing software. There’s also just one card slot for storage, so better get a lot of high capacity extras on stand-by.

Of course, not all situations may be applicable for the automated features so switching to manual function is needed. Not a problem either, as the D700 manages pretty well in the hands of serious beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike. The external controls and access to the menus are ergonomically placed and intuitively user-friendly. There’s no getting lost navigating through either the internal menu or even the printed manual as both are laid out and thought about really well.

Feature laden, slick and tough, it delivers consistently and responds to the demands of the serious photography buffs.
