One of the latest additions in the compact camera arena is Nikon’s successor to the Coolpix P700: the Coolpix P7100. There is no clear-cut difference in the design of the P700 and P7100 – both are sporting a utilitarian design with a hint of retro style, both are packed with 7.1x optical zoom lens and a three-inch LCD and both come with numerous controls and buttons found on top of and the body of the camera.
Now, now. Don’t back away yet as the Coolpix P7100 promises new and upgraded features that up the ante for Nikon’s line of advanced compact cameras. For one, the high resolution LCD of the P700 can be tilted, making it easy to take high and low angled images or videos. The P7100 also has some new buttons that aid in faster user interface, including the Fn2 button which may be programmed to easily access one of the different settings that the camera offers. The only disappoint in the device is that it still lacks Full HD movie-recording capabilities as it stuck with the original 720p movie mode.
What we love most about the P7100 is that it leaves room for experimentation and creativity by allowing its users to take full control of the entire shooting experience. Users can manually adjust the ISO, aperture and whatnot to take amazing photographs are simply select from the different automatic exposure modes.
The P7100 is even loaded with 18 scene modes which include Portrait, Landscape, Food, Museum, Pet Portrait, among others. The camera is also packed with a wide array of special effects, including Painting, Creative Monochrome, Cross Process, Soft, among others. It’s frustrating, however, that the camera does not come with Easy Panorama feature as it only comes with a manual Panorama option.
With all these features, the P7100 does not compromise image quality, producing great-looking, vivid photographs. Not to mention that it allows users to capture raw files and lets users do a few in-camera image editing.
The Nikon Coolpix P7100 is a must-have for hobbyists who not only want to take sublime images, but at the same time, take full manual control and experiment with their compact cameras.
