      Small footprint, Easy setup, affordable
    • The bad:
      Unreliable connection, Limited range

The Netgear DGN1000 Wireless-N Router with Built-in DSL Modem combines a high-performance router and a modem into a single device, saving you space, the hassle of extra cords, and the cost of leasing a router from your DSL service provider. It is designed to replace existing equipment provided by DSL service providers. It can take their signals and then distribute them via four 10/100 Ethernet ports and 2.4GHz 802.11b/g wireless. This all-in-one solution is easy to set up, has parental controls, and provides better wireless coverage than Wireless-G routers. The router cannot be considered a full-strength 802.11n wireless router because it has a maximum connection speed of 150 megabits/second instead of 300Mbs, and has just one antenna, however, it is useful if you are just looking to share an ADSL2+ connection over a handful of applications in your apartment/small home. While the DGN1000 cannot compete with a high-end device, it can be used for video streaming to a device, provided the separation between the two devices does not exceed 10m and the files being streamed are not in HD. The modem gave a very good performance with an ADSL2+ connection. It averaged a download speed of 16.595Mbps and an upload speed of 845 kilobits per second in a broadband speed test, but the upload speed was a little sluggish. The router's set up process is easy - it just involves providing a username and password. The modem will itself detect connection settings. After installing the modem when you first log in, it will perform a firmware update check - it will do this even prior to you get a chance of configuring it. Simply cancel and upgrade after making the settings. It's a good feature for users who don't feel comfortable manually upgrading the router's firmware. As a parent, you will appreciate the easy to use keyword and URL filtering, which can be used to block access to any sites or search terms that you don't want your kids to be exposed to. Users who try to access a prohibited site (or a site that features a flagged keyword) will end up with a big notice on their screen telling them that access has been denied. With a static IP network, there is available the option of setting your own computer as a trusted computer to not apply the filtering to it. You also have the option of checking the router's log for seeing if the flagged terms are being searched by anyone. While the parental filters are easy to implement, the forwarding of ports is quite the opposite. Port forwarding can be found in the 'Firewall Rules' section of the web interface, and you can only add rules that are already in the 'Service' drop-down list. In order to forward a port that's not on the list, you must first visit the 'Services' part of the Web interface to enter it, and then go back to the Firewall Rules to add it for your designated IP address. Apart from that, the web interface is easy to use overall and it's the same layout as every other Netgear router. Other useful features of the router include support for Dynamic DNS service, one-touch wireless networking security, and a button so you can switch off the wireless portion of the router when you're not using it. Overall, the Netgear DGN1000 is created to be a simple ADSL2+ modem/router. It's a small and good looking unit that's designed for basic tasks such as Internet sharing and standard-definition video streaming across your LAN. Consider it if you want a simple wireless router to use in an apartment or small house.
