    • The good:
User-friendly interface, decent wireless performance and range, economical
    • The bad:
wireless-g connection may soon be obsolete, vulnerable network security
While the world has its eyes on wireless-n technology, some wireless-g routers just won’t fade into oblivion that easily—such as the WRT54GL. In fact this Linksys product is said to be still widely used inspite of its network vulnerability. Compared to the current Linksys E series, looking at the WRT54GL is like being warped back in time. It sports two external antennas at the back and has none of the E series’ sleek casing. It also has a LED light display indicating which ports are in use and how stable the network connection is. This should come as no surprise, because the 54GL belongs to a time when Linksys was still Linksys’, and not Cisco’s. It supports wireless-g connection—essentially the next best thing to wireless-n, though quite far in terms of range and speed—and maintains a solid connection for clients up to 160 feet away from the router. This router’s crowning glory is it’s simple and very intuitive user and client interface. It is here that users can configure the network’s connection settings such as time-bound access procedures, wireless encryption protocols (WEP or WPA2) and MAC address filtering. Users can also allot static IP addresses and adjust triggers for online gaming. To top it off, the WRT54GL supports UPnP and has DMZ and QoS (Quality of Service) bandwidth control. Being an open source Linux-based code, its firmware support has several versions online, thanks to developers who decided to add some features to the WRT54GL. But this doesn’t change the fact that its network is quite vulnerable to intruder attacks. Looking at the new router models these days, it’s quite easy to see how far the WRT54GL lags behind in terms of style and technology. But one should consider that this is, first and foremost, an entry-level type and should be judged as such. Its strengths lie in its simplicity and economic value which is actually more than enough for people who are limited by budget and don’t have extremely fast internet connection, anyway. So for as long as wireless-g connection isn’t obsolete, the WRT54GL will remain a relevant and logical choice for practical buyers.
