Linksys SPA3102 Review

  • 4.5 / 5
    • The good:
Flexible and Powerful, Reliable, Many Features
    • The bad:
      Overwhelming for VoIP Beginners

Two devices in one box is what the Linksys SPA3102. Normally, VoIP devices tend to work in one area only and that you might need a separate box for your needs to be complete.

Not with the Linksys SPA3102 as it is a startup VoIP system that you can use in two ways: one phone in one side while the other is an access to a phone line from PSTN. Both parts can work and operate independently but it can be used and interact with one another. This device can be used for both office and home. A device like this that features complex features and uses is not in a way simple and easy to use. In fact, it can be overwhelming especially to a beginner. It may be a flexible and has a variety of options, but it is not plug and play and is also not click it and forget type of device.

The Linksys SPA3102 requires a bit of understanding and knowledge on networking, VoIP and SIP. However, there are a lot of options that is left at default and is useful and operable. This device exemplifies a complete package that is reliable, functional and convenient. With the Linksys SPA3102, you can now make analog calls to the internet as this device for routing of local calls coming in from land line and cellular phones to VoIP providers and vice versa. Thus, this eliminates the need and can reduce the charges for long distance calls.

Even if the internet connection is down, this device can redirect your calls to a traditional carrier. This device features VoIP adapter functions with integral connection in for “hop on, hop off” applications. You can even level the broadbrand connections. The features of this device include 2 Ethernet ports: one that is for WAN/LAN and the other are for the Ethernet/Internet. It also has built in router capability, capacity as DHCP server among others. And since this device only has one LAN port, you might need a LAN switch just to be able to extend.

That may be the only downside when using this product. When setting this device up, you must be patient if you are a beginner or if you know what to do, then this can be set up and ready to use in minutes. The device contains a FXO line pot so you can have it used as a one port FXO gateway. It also has a FXS phone port where your analog phone can be plugged into. With features such as this, the Linksys SPA3102 can be used for PSTN or PORTS service over failover capability. So you have the best of VoIP and PSTN landline network.

So no matter what you want to use and needed, the Linksys SPA3102 combines the best of what modern technology can offer, the convenience of voice over internet protocols or VoIP calling and the functionality of landline networks. It is flexible and inexpensive for the long run as calls can be made cheap or free depending on the networks.
