LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 8547 Review
LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 kit allows us to understand robotics, its working and mechanism in the easiest way possible even though one may not have much knowledge about it scientifically. This friendly and intuitive approach attracts people of varied ages.
This robotic kit contains sensors, motors and an electronic brain along with the central unit Mindstorms 2.0, a new, improved product. This kit is much more flexible, smarter and easy in approach as compared to its predecessor. It is surprisingly expensive for a supposed toy but, although it may seem like an ordinary toy, it can also be used for building complicated and interesting projects which could be business or work related. LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 kit includes the Mindstorms EV3 Intelligent Brick – which is also considered as the brain of the set –, an infrared regulated remote control, 550 Technic Lego pieces and 3 servo motors. There are a series of sensors including a color sensor, a sensor for touch and an infrared sensor.
The compatibility of this set has also been widely appreciated. One can mix and match the 500 Lego Technic pieces of different dimensions. The Intelligent Brick is considered as the nucleus part of the kit and carries a ton of features. It contains 8 Mindstorm cable port connections with modified RJ12 ports, an USB-port for connecting to one’s PC, a slot for micro SD card for expandable memory and a full size USB Port which can be used either for a portable Wi-Fi net connect, or as an additional digital device such as adaptors, mobile, etc. The Mindstorm EV3 Intelligent bricks have a total connection of 32 ports which can be used to build much more complicated projects and improvise on it. It also has an in-built Bluetooth router for direct connectivity with a mobile device which can be used as a remote for controlling the robot unit. This Intelligent Brick is also compatible with the iOS as well as the Android apps.
The monitor or remote controlling system of the robot has the following configuration, where the top of the brick has a monochrome LCD display, directions button, confirmation button and a speaker for playing the files out loud. Technology wise, the Mindstorm EV3 Intelligent Brick uses a processor called ARM9 along with a16MB memory plus a micro SD card for expandable memory. The Bluetooth version of 4.0 offers smooth and reliable performance for controlling the unit’s functions. It works directly with the native processing nucleus and is compatible over a range of mobile systems such as Android Apps and iOS. It includes the preset controls and is regulated by the LEGO Mindstorm Commander app. It is an extremely useful feature for the controlling of the prepared robots.
The sensor systems have had a power upgrade and are able to interact with the Intelligent Brick at speed of 1000 times per second. The color sensor is able to detect all seven colors and also has a reflected mode for identifying and removing the background light. This makes the robot as well as the experience much more sophisticated and complex. This kind of complexity may seem a little daunting to some users since LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 does require patience.
