    • The good:
Capacitive Touch Technology, Great Graphics, Awesome Feature Set
    • The bad:
Hefty Price Tag, Screen Doesn’t Perform Well In Direct Sunlight

The Garmin Nuvi 3490LMT is a thin and slim device that promises top-of-the line performance. It is packed with the expected basic features including spoken street names and commands, preloaded maps and 3D landmarks.

It also comes with some advanced features to ensure easier navigation and safer driving. The device may not look smaller than an average PND, but it is thinner than other Garmin products and iPhone 4. It measures 4.8 inches in width and 2.9 inches in height. It only weighs 4 ounces, making it very pocketable. It has a glass screen, chrome-finished edges and a rear panel that is somewhere between a black brushed metal texture and a glossy black plastic panel. This finish presumably allows GPS and Bluetooth signals to penetrate easier. Like most GPS devices, majority of the users' interactions take place at the touchscreen.

The 3490LMT has a 4.3-inch TFT display, with a resolution of 800 x 480px. Its touch sensitivity is capacitive, making it easy to type using the onscreen keyboard and multitouch commands. The glossy glass screen though does not perform well in direct sunlight due to serious glare and washing out. It also requires direct contact with the skin to function, so this comes as a bad news for people who wear gloves in places with icy climate. The 3490LMT has the same functions as other Garmin products, specifically the 3450 and 3450LM. The 3490LMT though comes with free lifetime map upgrades, which can be done up to four times per year.

It also has a free lifetime Traffic updates using the Digital 3DTraffic, which updates every 30 seconds over the HD broadcasting system that makes it easier to avoid jams. The device features voice recognition technology that enables users to verbally work through the menu while keeping both hands on the wheel. It also has the Garmin Guidance 3.0, an advanced navigation engine designed to make route planning fast and accurate. It gives detailed lane guidance and provides a variety of views at complicated junctions such as Bird's Eye and photoReal views. The 3490LMT also has a Bluetooth technology and Safe Text features that keep users in touch while driving.

It has a microSD slot, where users can store CityXplorer maps, a 'Where am I?' feature, Garmin Locate and enhanced pedestrian navigation which all make navigating around unfamiliar towns and cities easier and safer. Undoubtedly, the 3490LMT is significantly faster than the 2495LMT. Its menu transition is smooth and quick and entering addresses is effortless with just a light tap on the onscreen keyboard. The unit is very responsive and users can swipe to pan and pinch to zoom easy and fast enough. The GPS positioning is locked in quickly, the accuracy is maintained to acceptable levels and chosen routes are usually matched with traffic patterns and shortcuts. Overall, the Garmin Nuvi 3490LMT is a powerful GPS device. It is pocket friendly, easy to use and greatly functional, making it one of the best Garmin products that money can buy.
