The Garmin Forerunner 405CX is the most recent edition of Garmin’s popular Forerunner GPS running watch series. It records time, pace, distance, route (including altitude), heart rate, and calories burned. With the exception of GPS location, the data collected by the watch can be viewed by users while they run. In addition to recording current data, the watch can be used to recall previous workouts, and runners can compete against their own workout history with the watch’s Virtual Partner feature. After the workout, collected data automatically uploads onto the owner’s computer when the watch is within wireless range. The Garmin Forerunner 405CX also comes with a second wrist band option suitable for smaller wrists. For runners this watch is a dream. No need for a foot pod, with GPS, you get a much more accurate level of speed and distance. Having the Virtual Partner feature to race against a pace is really nice too. Loading workout data onto your computer is mostly effortless. After creating an account with Garmin Connect, you are instructed to bring your watch to within 9 feet of your computer (with the USB Ant stick plugged in) to transfer data. Once the data is loaded, the Garmin Connect web site does a fantastic job of displaying all of the information in a very easy to read format. The GPS feature on the Garmin Forerunner 405CX has been praised as one of the most geographically accurate among running watches. In cases where the GPS function is not needed (such as indoor workouts or wearing the watch in a stationary location between runs), the GPS can be turned off, which helps conserve battery life. The Garmin Forerunner 405CX works in all weathers too. It is rated IPX7 which means its been tested for 30 minutes submerged to a 1 metre depth. So the watch should be fine in a rain storm or light showers, just don’t go swimming with it. If we were to give this watch some black marks, it would be the touch sensitive bezel, but only if you forget to lock it. If you don't lock it and bump into somebody in a running race you can lose your data or get your settings cleared. Also numerous owners have reported that sweating causes the bezel to stick and stop working, but according to reports, if you regularly rinse the watch with clean water or towel it off, it will keep on working fine. All in all the Garmin Forerunner 405CX is a great device. It is extremely accurate and records an impressive range of data, which allows for excellent workout tracking, and it comes in a sleek and easy to use package.
