Garmin eTrex 20 Review
The Garmin eTrex 20 is a compact GPS designed for multiple uses. This recent addition to the Garmin portable GPS lineup is one of the smallest and lightest unites available in the market.
It measures 4 inches high, 2.1 inches wide and 1.2 inches thick and weighs merely 5 ounces with a pair of AA batteries installed. It comes with a USB cable and owner's manual in English and 6 other languages. The eTrex 20 is a mid-level unit with features like memory card slot, high sensitivity GPS receiver and the ability to use BlueChart g2 marine chard cards and other land-based Garmin cartography. Located at the left side of the device are the up and down arrow buttons and menu keys, while the power and back buttons are found at the right side. The joystick, which serves as an enter button too, is placed at the front panel of the GPS device.
Found at the rear are the battery compartment, USB port and microSD slot. The USB cable allows data transfer of waypoint, route, track data and screenshots between the eTrex 20 and personal computer. The eTrex 20 sports a 2.2-inch 65,000-color TFT screen that carries 176 x 220 pixels resolution, making curved lines and small fonts on the map page easy to read. The screen is easy to view as it has 14 different color palettes for both daylight and night viewing. There is no pushbutton backlighting, though. This device is packed with Garmin's latest version of intuitive and easy-to-use handheld software, giving users access to function through 24 menu listed main pages.
The important pages like Map, 'Where To?', Compass, Mark Waypoint, Trip Computer and Setup are all displayed on the top on a single screen, but this can be re-arranged according to users' preferences. Mariners will definitely find this device useful with its Waypoint Manager, Route Planner and Track Manager features. The eTrex 20 also comes with the Bluechart g2 that let users find tide, current and obstruction information found in individual submenus under the 'Where To?' page. What differentiates the eTrex 20 with other Garmin units is its ability to use GLONASS and GPS satellites.
GLONASS helps in improving accuracy, especially at northerly latitudes and in urban and natural canyons. The device can store up to 2000 waypoints and 200 routes. It is water-resistant to IPX-7 standards and can be submerged to a depth of one meter for 30 minutes. With the superb features of the eTrex 20, it is definitely one of the greatest offerings from Garmin.
