One of Fujifilm’s recent releases is the Fujifilm FinePix XP30 which they claim to be the world’s first water, shock, dust and freeze proof model with built-in GPS. Unfortunately, the camera’s protection proved unreliable. The Fujifilm FinePix XP30 is an all-around camera with a striking color and a unique design. Its exterior is shiny, robust and with anti-slip rubber grip. The LCD is 1.27inch and easy to view at night but not under direct sunlight. It uses the popular Fujinon lens of 5x optical zoom and 14.0 effective megapixels sensor which should capture even smallest details. However, when it was tested, not all pictures showed the expected sharpness. The FinePix XP30 is functional even under water of up to 5m depth. It also works well during the winter season with a temperature of up to 10?C. It is unaffected by dust or sand and can endure 1.5m fall. We’ve found though that the waterproofing and dust proofing built into the camera isn’t 100% reliable. The GPS function of the FinePix XP30 displays the name of the place where the picture is taken, the longitude and latitude coordinates for exact location identification. There is also the Photo Navigation mode feature which informs the user about his exact distance from the picture he is presently viewing on the screen and the directions to take should he decide to go back to that place. This GPS function, however, doesn’t work well indoors and the battery gets low fast especially when GPS is working. The video and audio don’t work excellently as advertised. The microphone is not performing well either. In the video mode, the camera makes some unnecessary sounds. Included in the features is the Motion Panorama that can put three shots together for a panoramic picture. Pictures can be edited for a more perfect shot. For the user to enjoy a good shot, the battery and card compartment should be kept locked which, unfortunately, gets unlocked very easily. The FinePix XP30 is available in three attractive colors: black, silver, orange, blue and green.
