   The Canon PIXMA MG8250 is an all-in-one printer for anybody interested in general-purpose home use, but with a particular interest in reproducing photographs. It produces excellent prints at reasonable speeds, but is comparatively pricey to run. Extras like the transparency adapter and CD/DVD print and the facility to print remotely from a wide variety of devices makes it a very flexible scanning and printing device.
   
   The MG8250 is essentially a large black rectangular, matte black box with nicely curved corners. Said to be modelled on its EOS range of digital cameras, the matte look of the printer is a great improvement over the high-gloss, fingerprint-prone models. It has an elegant look about it and is a relatively compact (47 x 39.6 x 19.9 cm, weight 10.7 Kb) machine that will go pretty much anywhere.
   
   The scanner top looks quite plain, until you switch the machine on when, not only does the 88mm LCD display light up in the centre of the lid, but illuminated touch buttons appear towards its front and indicators shine through its beautifully textured surround.
   
   Unlike a lot of recent models, this display isn’t a touchscreen. Instead Canon has added a number of touch buttons beneath it that light up as you select different functions. It's not quite as immediate as using a touchscreen, but it still makes this model's menus easy to navigate.
   
   Set-up is easy using the on-screen menus displayed on the 8.8cm color display which tilts up from the top of the matte black rounded case. Hidden behind a flap on the front fascia are the card slots which support the usual flash memory formats. Connection to PC/Mac can be through USB, Ethernet, or Wireless. Paper can be fed from either the rear paper tray or lower paper cassette. Both feeds hold up to 150 sheets of A4 sized paper.
   
   With a resolution of 4800x9600dpi, the scanner is capable of capturing the finest detail from photographs and images. In addition when lifting the scanner lid there is a facility to scan negatives and transparencies. The quality scanner also allows for fast and accurate copies. A black and white copy takes just over 10 seconds.
   
   Where the MG8250 really stands apart from the competition is the print quality. The machines 9600x2400dpi print head produces borderless images with rich and vibrant colors. Print speeds are good too, with a post card size image printed in around 30 seconds. It also allows you to print on to coated CD / DVD media by inserting the provided tray into the slot at the front of the printer. In addition to the great print quality, the MG8250 offers some really useful printing features such as auto duplex printing, collate, booklet print etc.
   
   The printer uses six separate ink cartridges, which really do help it to produce high-quality output, especially for photos. However, these cartridges aren't cheap and lead to higher than average print costs.
   
   Overall, The Canon PIXMA MG8250 is a beautiful all-in-one printer for anybody interested in general-purpose home use, but with a particular interest in reproducing photographs. It's a delight to use, produces excellent prints at reasonable speeds. Add in a great line-up of features and you've got yourself a top-notch photo printer. It's a high-end choice, but for those after perfection this is an all-in-one that's hard to ignore.
