    • The good:
Lightweight and easy to use, Wide ISO level range and reduced noise from shooting at high ISO level, HD video recording (can record 720p and 1080p movies)
    • The bad:
3.7 frames per second speed at continuous shooting mode (EOS 50D: 6.3fps; EOS 7D 8fps), Lacks toughness and weather-proofing of EOS 7D's alloy frame, The 18-55mm lens kit does not do the camera's technology justice
Canon EOS 550D is a mid-level digital SLR which is ideal for enthusiasts or amateurs who want to graduate from entry-level SLRs. Although it is not one of Canon's higher end DSLR, it is still comparable to the EOS 50D and the pro-level EOS 7D. EOS 550D's 18 Megapixel is a huge step up from EOS 50D's 15.1 Megapixel. It also has EOS 7D's metering system that automatically meters the color and brightness of the scene and adjusts the exposure accordingly.

EOS 550D still cannot compare to the two Canon models that are aimed for more professional photographers. In continous shooting mode, EOS 7D can shoot up to 8 frames per second while EOS 50D has 6.3 frames per second speed. EOS 550D can only shoot 3.7 frames per second and can only store up to 34 JPEG images or 6 raw files. EOS 550D, unlike 7D, does not have an alloy frame making it lighter and easier to carry around but also more vulnerable to bumps and knocks.

The huge advantage of EOS 550D over its predecessor and the higher end DSLRs (50D and 7D) is its HD video recording features. It can record high quality videos of 720p resolution (at 50 - 60 frames- per-second) up to 1080p (at 24 - 30 frames-per-second). It also allows users to use an external stereo microphone and to adjust the exposure while recording a video.

The 3 inch rear LCD makes it easy for users to record movies, view captured images, and navigate through the settings menu. EOS 550D also offers a wide range of ISO level (ISO 3200 and higher) and, unlike most mid-level DSLRs, allows users to use high ISO level without worrying about the noise. Although this camera boasts of 18 Megapixel resolution, you might still find the images a bit soft in terms of tone and crispness (this is not a problem exclusive to EOS 550D, most Canon DSLRs produces soft JPEG images). It is recommended that you shoot in RAW images instead and EOS 550D offers smooth transition through its settings menu for those who are not used in shooting RAW.

EOS 550D is sold with the standard 18-55mm kit lens which is okay for day-to-day shooting. But for serious enthusiasts, it is recommended to buy higher end lenses to compliment the camera's features. Although EOS 550D is marketed for users who have already used low-end DSLRs, it is also a recommended camera for entry-level photographers or budding enthusiasts because it is quite easy to use.
