    The Canon EF 24-105mm IS USM is a standard zoom lens with f/4 maximum aperture especially made for Canon EOS SLR cameras. With 1 Super UD glass element and 3 spherical lenses that work together towards reduced aberration and distortion. It comes with 1-year warranty.

    The Image Stabilizer (IS) lessens image distortion brought about by shaking of the camera. It automatically changes the path of light so that the image returns to the right position on the sensor or film plane. This is one feature that is crucial since vibrations or shakes are unavoidable especially when doing an outdoor shoot, much more, when you don’t use a tripod. This Canon EF 24-105mm has an IS of up to 3 stops. On the other hand, if you are using the video with the built-in microphone, the sound of the Image Stabilizer motor can be heard in the video. The sound becomes an ambient sound to your video which is not really pleasant.

    This EF 24-105mm offers 50% zoom than the 24-70mm. It is 10 ounces less weight compared to the 24-70mm. With the 24-105mm, you can just walk around and enjoy picture-taking, free from any hand or shoulder pain since it is not that heavy. With a nice strap, you can even carry it around your neck for many hours. Unless you are shooting for work, the lighter lens is the best choice for fun.

    Just like other lenses, the Canon EF 24-105mm has its own flaws. It is not speedy enough when getting shots of moving object indoors. The Image Stabilization does help in taking shots of stationary subjects but it does not help a bit when the subject is moving.

    Compared to other lenses, this one is better only from 30-35mm. When taking a shot outdoor, it is satisfactory; however when shooting at 24mm indoor, the output is unacceptably distorted and pretty obvious. For indoor, it is a little slow. Another issue is the auto focus. It is quite sluggish in dim settings. Though the USM is relatively quiet, it finds difficult to lock on to focus in low-light settings. You need to have a good contrast for this matter.

    If you are a daylight photo shooter and you don’t really like taking wide angle shots, then this lens might be less of a problem to you. Many users have a lot of good things to say but reliability and consistency remains questionable. Maybe this is due to quality control. It has to be tested first to make sure that you get what you are paying for.

    Overall, the Canon 24-105mm is a more of an outdoor than indoor lens. It indeed costs an arm and a leg compared to its older versions. But it is easy to carry and has the Image Stability feature. Even if money is not a big issue, it is advised to do a more extensive research before giving away a grand for this lens.
