ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime 32GB TF201
The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime 32GB TF201 is one of the best Android powered tablets because it delivers value and performance at the same time. It is in the same price range as the new Apple iPad and features an 8-megapixel camera, Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich and an optional keyboard dock.
Specs in a Nutshell
The Transformer Prime TF201 takes pride in its svelte design. Its measurements are 10.35 x 7.12 x 0.33 inches and it only weighs 1.29 pounds.
This was a drastic size and weight reduction from the previous TF101 model that measured 10.7 by 6.9 by 0.5 inches and weighed 1.4 pounds. It is one of the thinnest and most lightweight tablets available and only the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 have better measurements.
Discarding its plastic body, The TF201 now has an aluminum backplane that can come in either colors of Amethyst Gray or Champagne Gold. It has a matching plastic bezel for smoother edges.
Unlike the new Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the TF201 has ports. Its docking port is in the horizontal length of the tablet while the left side has both the microGDMI port and the slot for the microSD card.
The Transformer Prime TF201 is powered by NVIDIA's 1.3-GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and has top visual rendering strength compared to other tablets. It costs $499 for the 32GB model and $599 for the 64GB variant.
One of the key features of the Transformer Prime TF201 is its compatibility with a Keyboard Dock. When connected with the Transformer Prime Keyboard Dock, this tablet “transforms” into a mini laptop.
This dock is made of aluminum and has a touchpad that is capable of multi-touch gestures. It costs an additional $149 but it also has an additional USB 2.0 port, an SDHC card reader and additional battery life of up to 18 hours.
Visuals and System Performance
The visuals of the TF201 is worthy of the term “next generation” for an Android tablet because it is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor. It has a 10.1-inch screen and a display of 1,280 x 800 pixels.
NVIDIA introduces the Variable Symmetric Multiprocessing technology, which helps to optimize the quad-core Cortex A9 CPU performance of the TF201.
It also has three performance modes. The normal mode maximizes the performance of the tablet. The balanced mode caps the performance at 1.2GHz while the power savings mode saves battery life by using only 1GHz of CPU performance.
The TF201 has problems with its file transfer speeds especially with writing to the tablet. Another area of concern is its audio because the sound from the monaural speaker sounds muddied at times.
As for its picture taking capabilities, the TF201 has two cameras. The front facing one has a very pedestrian 1.2 megapixel lens. But the rear-facing one is above the competition because it is capable of taking 8-megapixel pictures. The colors and focus are better compared to the previous Transformer tablet.
The Final Verdict
The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime 32GB TF201 is value for its money. It is fast, easy to use and looks good. With its Tegra 3 processor, Android 4.0 operating system and keyboard dock the TF201 can handle many situations for users.
